{"id":67132,"date":"2024-10-04T16:39:50","date_gmt":"2024-10-04T20:39:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/statescoop.com\/?p=67132"},"modified":"2024-10-05T17:47:47","modified_gmt":"2024-10-05T21:47:47","slug":"irs-direct-file-code-america-new-jersey-iadho-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/statescoop.com\/irs-direct-file-code-america-new-jersey-iadho-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"N.J., Idaho latest states to join IRS direct tax filing program"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Residents in New Jersey and Idaho can now file their federal and state taxes using the IRS\u2019s free online-filing tool, the civic tech nonprofit Code for America announced Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new partnerships mean that the <a href=\"https:\/\/statescoop.com\/maryland-irs-direct-file-2025-tax-season-code-for-america\/\">IRS&#8217;s Direct File program<\/a>, which allows taxpayers to submit federal tax returns electronically, will be available in 24 states in its first year as a permanent program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIRS Direct File will offer significant time- and cost-savings for many New Jerseyans filing their federal taxes this year,\u201d New Jersey Treasurer Elizabeth Maher Muoio said in the announcement. \u201cWith the pending addition of FileYourStateTaxes to the State\u2019s offerings, Garden State taxpayers will also be able to realize a more streamlined experience in filing their State taxes that will keep more money in their pockets, and create a more efficient process for State government.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The IRS began testing Direct File with 12 states earlier this year <a href=\"https:\/\/statescoop.com\/irs-direct-filing-taxes-free-pilot-project\/\">after drafting a letter to the Federation of Tax Administrators<\/a> to gauge interest. The program allows taxpayers to file their federal income tax returns directly to the government at no cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the pilot program, several states, including Arizona and New York, provided companion state tax filing tools that allowed Direct File users to file their state returns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New Jersey and Idaho will eventually have access to <a href=\"https:\/\/codeforamerica.org\/programs\/tax-benefits\/state-tax-filing-tool\/\">FileYourStateTaxes<\/a>, Code for America&#8217;s state tax filing tool, which it developed during the 2024 tax filing season. In May, the IRS announced it would make the Direct File program permanent following positive user feedback. Shortly after, <a href=\"https:\/\/codeforamerica.org\/news\/code-for-america-expands-fileyourstatetaxes\/\">Code for America announced<\/a> it would expand the program by bringing FileYourStateTaxes
