Wyoming has had significant turnover<\/a> in the chief information officer role in recent years. That\u2019s why the state\u2019s current CIO, Jeff Clines, said building trust with agencies is a key part of his job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI want to be that trusted business partner for the agencies, where they can come to me rather than a vendor or third party,\u201d said Clines, who started in the role last October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said building trust includes creating a strong \u201ctechnology foundation\u201d for agencies to innovate and embrace new technologies like generative artificial intelligence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think we\u2019re at a point in technology where there is going to be a lot of transformation,\u201d Clines said. \u201cWe\u2019re going to look back 20, 30 years from now and see how quickly we [changed].\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clines said a centralized IT agency\u2019s role is to focus the state government\u2019s technology strategy, which can improve the experiences of residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGenerative AI and other technologies have the opportunity to kind of split the direction where, depending on who a state agency\u2019s listening to, we could go in 20 different directions,\u201d Clines said. \u201cI need to be the one that\u2019s driving a citizen-first mindset. Focus first on the services and how they impact the citizen and how it makes their lives easier, and then we\u2019ll worry about the backside.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
