Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes met with state lawmakers Tuesday to request additional cybersecurity funding, pointing to a recent hack<\/a> of an online portal operated by his office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to a press release<\/a> from Fontes\u2019 office, the secretary is asking for a one-time allotment of $10 million and $3.5 million in ongoing funding to \u201cmodernize and protect\u201d Arizona\u2019s election infrastructure. In a private, bipartisan session with legislators, Fontes reportedly highlighted the defacement last month to a political-candidate portal in which headshots were replaced with images of Ruhollah Khomeini, the late revolutionary and founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur defenses held this time\u2014but we can’t rely on outdated systems to protect us forever,\u201d Fontes said in the release. \u201cWe need to modernize our infrastructure now, not after something goes wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Fontes\u2019 office, the website was \u201cquickly isolated and secured, thanks to existing cybersecurity protocols and close collaboration with the Arizona Department of Homeland Security,\u201d preventing intrusion into more critical systems. The state\u2019s voter information database and its Address Confidentiality Program \u2014 which protects the personal information of victims of domestic violence, sexual offense and stalking \u2014 were not affected, according to the release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the press release, Fontes\u2019 office called the need for funding \u201curgent,\u201d and noted that lawmakers of both parties seemed to understand the request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCybersecurity is not a partisan issue\u2014it\u2019s about trust in our democracy,\u201d Fontes said in the release. \u201cWe have a duty to ensure our systems remain secure, modern, and resilient\u2014now and for every election to come.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

State support for cybersecurity is especially salient as the federal government scales back programs that state and local governments have long relied upon. The Center for Internet Security\u2019s elections infrastructure information-sharing group lost its funding this year<\/a>, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency has eliminated dozens of positions<\/a> that supported communications with local agencies. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
