{"id":72486,"date":"2025-08-21T14:27:34","date_gmt":"2025-08-21T18:27:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/statescoop.com\/?p=72486"},"modified":"2025-08-21T14:29:04","modified_gmt":"2025-08-21T18:29:04","slug":"enterprise-architecture-nascio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/statescoop.com\/enterprise-architecture-nascio\/","title":{"rendered":"Enterprise architecture &#8216;no longer optional&#8217; for state tech offices, claims new report"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The National Association of State Chief Information Officers on Thursday published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nascio.org\/resource-center\/resources\/enterprise-architecture-part-3-a-critical-design-first-discipline-for-managing-complexity-and-change\/\">the third part<\/a> of its enterprise architecture report, urging state technology leaders to adopt a set of organizational practices it says are \u201cno longer an optional discipline.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA deliberate, well-documented and continually updated enterprise architecture ensures that state governments can navigate their evolving landscapes effectively, aligning strategy, investments and outcomes,\u201d the report reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The latest report continues the job of the first two parts of the report, published last <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nascio.org\/resource-center\/resources\/business-architecture-part-1-a-strategic-blueprint-for-state-cios\/\">March<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nascio.org\/resource-center\/resources\/enterprise-architecture-a-guide-to-state-government-continual-transformation\/\">May<\/a>, to prepare state CIOs with a blueprint for matching business objectives to outcomes, prioritize spending and eliminate dreaded silos, the isolated technologies and teams that can impede organizational goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NASCIO\u2019s latest report urges leaders to implement enterprise architecture, or EA, to ensure that goals are aligned with day-to-day activities, take stock of their technology portfolios and manage change. The report notes that EA provides a \u201ccontinually refreshed roadmap for managing\u201d a state government\u2019s ongoing evolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report\u2019s author, Eric Sweden, writes that EA\u2019s ability to help manage change is one of its most compelling selling points.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe state government enterprise is one of the most complex organizations, integrating human dynamics with intricate systems,\u201d writes Sweden, a NASCIO program director. \u201cManaging this complexity requires the principles of a design-first approach, systems thinking and engineering disciplines\u2014the same principles used to design advanced creations like spacecraft, a factory or cities.
